After 58 years, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) debuts album award including streams. The Gold & Platinum program modernized the album certification, making it “easier” to go Gold and Platinum. On February 1, 2016, the RIAA announced that they would now include on-demand audio and video streams and a track sale equivalent in Gold & Platinum Album Awards. Both sales and streams will finally collectively be determined for single and album certifications!
I mean, in all honesty I feel that this is a great thing. These days everything happens digitally and everyone streams music. For the RIAA to finally recognize this and understand that this is the new way of people getting their music says a lot. Just because everyone doesn’t physically buy an album from stores, doesn’t mean that we aren’t enjoying the music of these artists who deserve to go Gold and/or Platinum.
Among those who have went Platinum and are being awarded new certificates are, Big Sean “Dark Sky Paradise” (Def Jam Recordings), Coldplay “Ghost Stories” (Atlantic/Parlophone) and Kendrick Lamar “To Pimp a Butterfly” (Top Dawg Entertainment/Interscope.)
